A research team from Chongqing Medical University in Chengdu, China, conducted a study to investigate whether regular consumption of probiotics can decrease the risk of periodontitis. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which involved 4,577 adults during the period 2009-2014, the researchers discovered that individuals who consumed probiotics had a significantly lower incidence of periodontitis compared to those who did not (41.08% vs. 27.83%). After a thorough analysis considering variables such as age, sex, ethnicity, income, and smoking, the researchers concluded that probiotic intake is associated with a decreased risk of developing periodontitis, with an odds ratio of 0.70. Moreover, by evaluating the effectiveness of a model that incorporates probiotic intake along with other variables, it was confirmed that including probiotics in the model enhances the ability to detect the presence of periodontitis in adults. This study provides additional evidence supporting the connection between probiotic consumption and a reduced risk of periodontitis, suggesting that incorporating probiotics into the daily diet may promote oral health.
