Tips for preventing coronavirus

A team from various medical organizations developed a series of recommendations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The general population should take the following care.

1) Hand hygiene by frequently washing with soap and water or alcohol gel, particularly after coughing or sneezing. The use of alcohol gels can replace hand washing if they are visibly clean.

2) Avoid touching your face and the mucous membranes of your eyes, nose, or mouth.

3) Practice good respiratory hygiene, i.e., cover your mouth and nostrils with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

4) Only persons with respiratory symptoms or assisting persons who are symptomatic or have a confirmed disease diagnosis should wear masks.

5) Maintain a distance of one to two meters from symptomatic people, do not shake hands, kiss, or hug; in the same way, avoid going to places where there may be crowds of people.

6) Do not share utensils for personal use for drinks and food, glasses, cutlery, etc.

7) Keep the rooms ventilated and with good hygiene.

8) Assess the risks involved in unnecessary travel to countries or cities where sustained transmission occurs (update on official pages).

9) Voluntary social distancing with isolation and quarantine of symptomatic people.

10) If symptoms begin to appear and are mild, it is suggested that medical consultation be carried out at home, using alternatives such as video consultation or medical consultation by telephone for guidance, avoiding going to health care centers; consider that in a situation of possible over-demand for talks, there may be a delay in the medical evaluation of these cases.

ABOUT THE VIRUS

  • Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause everything from a common cold to severe illness.

  • The recently discovered coronavirus causes COVID-19 disease.

  • The most common symptoms are fever and respiratory conditions, such as coughing or difficulty breathing.

  • The infection can cause pneumonia, respiratory failure, kidney failure, and even death in the most severe cases.

  • Some coronaviruses can be transmitted from person to person. However, it usually occurs after close contact with an infected person through droplets produced by sneezing or coughing.

  • The incubation period for coronaviruses is about 14 days. During this period, it is necessary to be attentive to the appearance of fever and/or respiratory symptoms.

  • In addition, early medical consultation should be made by reporting a history of contact with a confirmed case.
