First symptoms of HIV may be reflected in the mouth
The World Health Organization says HIV remains one of the world's biggest public health problems. In 2016, one million people lost their lives from causes related to this disease.
The first symptoms of HIV can be reflected in the mouth.

As the immune system weakens, more than half of HIV-positive people suffer infections and other problems in the oral cavity, such as dry mouth, candidiasis, gingivitis, periodontitis, ulcers, and sores. These conditions can be painful and make chewing and swallowing difficult, worsening the patient's quality of life.
Through an oral examination, dentists can prevent most of the oral lesions associated with this disease; it may even be the first step in detecting and treating this disease.
These pathologies can be treated by going to the dentist regularly, maintaining good oral hygiene guidelines (brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste after meals and using floss or an interdental brush), and informing the doctor if it is suspected that the medication causes any side effects in the mouth.

In 2017, according to WHO, there were 20.9 million people on antiretroviral treatment, enabling HIV patients to enjoy a better quality of life.
